Will there be A Haunting in Venice 2?

A Haunting in Venice has a pretty complete story, but still leaves some loose ends, which may lead audiences to wonder if there will be a sequel.

A Haunting in Venice is about to become the newest Agatha Christie-based mystery film, directed by Kenneth Branagh, who will once again be starring as the world-famous detective Hercule Poirot.

A Haunting in Venice follows this synopsis: “Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot investigates a murder while attending a Halloween séance at a haunted palazzo in Venice, Italy.”

The movie has a pretty startling ending, which leaves some threads of mystery for the audience to think about for themselves. However, does this open the door for a sequel?

Will there be a sequel to A Haunting in Venice?

While not impossible, it seems very unlikely that there will be A Haunting in Venice 2.

This is because Kenneth Branagh is adapting the Agatha Christie books as a sort of anthology series. While Hercule Poirot appears in each movie (and in over 80 of Christie’s stories) every film will be it’s own thing.

Meaning we won’t see a lot of these most recent characters again. Now, there is a chance some plot aspects could carry over into another film, such as Poirot’s growing belief in the supernatural, but only time will tell.

Will there be another Agatha Christie movie?

While nothing is confirmed, a fourth Kenneth Branagh-Agatha Christie stint is definitely on the table.

Speaking with Total Film (via GamesRadar+) the movie’s producer James Prichard revealed that there is plenty of opportunity for the franchise to continue: “If Ken wants to do more, and Michael wants to write more, we’ll certainly do another. There’s a lot of material still to go, so we’re not going to run out of inspiration.”

The third movie, which is currently boasting a 79% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is considered by many to be the best of the series so far. Meaning it would appear foolish to stop now, so unless the movie bombs at the box office, no doubt Kenneth Branagh will intend to keep the voice of Agatha Christie alive on film.

And we certainly aren’t opposed to another iteration. As we state in our 3-star review of the movie, “This Agatha Christie franchise is likely to keep going strong, and we’re glad for that. While far from the movie of the year, A Haunting in Venice is looking to be the movie of this year’s Halloween, which certainly isn’t a bad feat.”

As for what plot could be covered next, there’ plenty of material, but Christie’s 1926 novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is considered to be her magnum opus – and was once voted by the British Crime Writers’ Association as the best crime novel ever written – so perhaps that would be a good next choice.
