Yellowstone fans explain why Season 6 “isn’t necessary”

A vocal segment of the Yellowstone fanbase insists Paramount’s neo-Western series doesn’t need a sixth season.

Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone charts the exploits of the Dutton family, who own the biggest ranch in Montana. It’s been a wild ride too, with the Duttons pitted against everything from shady land developers to contract killers.

Indeed, it seemed that the Duttons’ adventures would go on forever, even after reports that star Kevin Costner was stepping down as the dynasty’s patriarch, John Dutton.

Yet Yellowstone will nevertheless call it a day with the November 2024 release of Season 5 Part 2 – and some viewers wouldn’t have it any other way.

Yellowstone fans explain why Season 6 “isn’t necessary”

According to fans on the r/YellowstonePN subreddit, Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1 has already rendered Season 6 – and quite possibly Season 5 Part 2 – pointless.

“The way Season 5 ended was perfect for what the show has become,” wrote one redditor. “No happy ending. No resolution. No big grand finale. Just continuous fighting. Until death. That’s what it has been for over 100 years and that’s what it will continue to be. The show has become a drag. Let it die. No need to figure out [Season S6] without Kevin Costner. Milk the other shows. Thank you for the ride.”

“Honestly yeah… you’re right,” agreed another post. “I’m way more interested in [prequel series] 1923 and some of the ideas for the other shows. I’m not interested in seeing the family continue with it without John Dutton in [the] modern day at the ranch.”

Other fans weren’t convinced, though. “We are all traumatized about how the show goes downhill every season after [Season] 3 but we need some kind of conclusion,” posted one naysayer. “Yeah, there’s a resolve needed,” echoed a second. “Way too many resolutions needed to wrap this show up, unless they wrap them in a new show and who wants to wait for that?”

Yellowstone fans aren’t happy about series finale delay

The Yellowstone Season 6 debate comes after the show’s devotees took aim at Sheridan for the gap between Season 5 Parts 1 and 2. While Part 1’s final episode dropped on January 1, 2023, Part 2 doesn’t premiere until November 10, 2024.

Several redditors attributed this delay to Sheridan’s hectic workload. The showrunner is attached to several Yellowstone spinoffs, as well as the likes of Mayor of Kingstown and Tulsa King.

However, some Yellowstone fans were quick to defend Sheridan, citing Costner’s scheduling and the 2023 Hollywood strikes as other factors that slowed down Season 5 Part 2’s release.
