“Things you should never say to a Yellowstone fan” sparks debate
ParamountThe new list of “things you should never say to a Yellowstone fan” might be satirical, but it’s certainly sparked some opinions from the Yellowstone fanbase.
Yellowstone is Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western saga, centering on the flawed Dutton family, who own the largest contiguous ranch in the US. The prime-time melodrama has continued to grow from strength to strength, with its most recent premiere breaking ratings records with more than 12 million viewers across the US.
Since then, there have been rumors of behind-the-scenes drama involving John Dutton star Kevin Costner and Sheridan, talks of Matthew McConaughey leading the franchise, and significant delays to Season 5 Part 2 – which will now officially be the last we’ll see of the flagship Yellowstone series.
But that’s not to say the franchise won’t continue through its various spinoffs, and now fans new and old are watching the show from the beginning thanks to a rights deal with CBS. While this has sparked new discussions about the plot and characters, a satirical article poking fun at the fanbase has led to a debate online.
“Things you should never say to a Yellowstone fan” sparks debate
The Onion – a comedic publication that creates satirical articles on the news – just published a new feature titled ‘Things you should never say to a Yellowstone fan’. Some of the entries include “Isn’t that a show for old people?” and “I don’t have Peacock.”
Things quickly descend with the likes of “Is five spin-offs enough for you greedy piggies?” and “So it’s like Game Of Thrones with rednecks.” The follow-ups are just as amusing, including “1997… that is not one of the sanctioned Yellowstone years.”
But perhaps the most cutting of all is “Who is that old guy?” as it continues, “Kevin Costner used to be a big movie star when the target audience was young.” Oh, and the opening sentence: “Yellowstone, a show that has become mandatory viewing for white males over 50.”
The article has been shared on Reddit, where it’s sparked a debate among fans of the show. Many of them agree with some of the tongue-in-cheek comments, with one writing: “‘So it’s like Game of Thrones with rednecks?’ Never really thought of it like that but, yeah lol.”
Another extended this comment, writing: “Also ‘The Duttons are like the Lannisters from Game of Thrones, complete with a terrible father, a ball-busting daughter that both emulates and despises toxic men, a black sheep son who’s actually the nicest and smartest of all of them, and creepy incest vibes.’”
One quoted the line “who is that old guy” while sharing a gif of Will Smith shaking his head. But another took issue with the quote “The show does a lot to hire indigenous performers and showcase their involvement… No fan of the show wants to hear this sh*t.”
“Most of them are funny but I found the ‘indigenous’ off the mark. Pretty much saying fans are conservative and only want to see white people,” they wrote. “People don’t like Monica, but I have not seen complaints about native representation.”
“How is it people say this show is dull and boring? People even call Beth one-dimensional,” said another, while a third added, “It’s definitely not dull and boring. But it is extremely cringe, at least for me. I think one of the biggest problems is that it’s hard to tell if Sheridan really understands the characters he makes.”
