“Creepy” Young Sheldon character slammed by fans

The Cooper family might not be perfect, but they are at least tolerable – unlike one “creepy” Young Sheldon character currently being slammed by fans.

Since its launch in 2017, Young Sheldon has done something undoubtedly unique by bridging the gap between religion and science. While Sheldon has his heart set on facts, mother Mary has had her adult life shaped by her Christian beliefs.

This means that fans are treated to an eccentric batch of side characters, from Sheldon’s first intellectual rival Paige through to his brand-new German professor, played by Star Trek‘s Robert Picardo.

However, this doesn’t always mean fans are happy with Medford residents, with one now being branded as “creepy” online.

Over on Reddit, fans of Young Sheldon have been pulling apart Pastor Rob on account of being too “creepy.”

Introduced back in Season 5, Pastor Rob is the youth pastor of First Baptist Church of Medford and teaches Sunday School. After being interviewed and accepted by the church, he surprised everyone with his unconventional methods in order to keep the kids truly engaged. Though he was a hit with the children, Mary wasn’t convinced.

Over time, the two developed an unexpected friendship, with Rob being the first to tell Mary about what happened between Georgie and Mandy. However, this also leads to George suspecting that the two had been having an affair – with fans still believing this could be addressed in Season 7.

“Pastor Rob is creepy on every level,” one fan posted over on Reddit. “From the moment he appeared on screen his looks, coupled with his actions make him someone I would NOT want near my kids. I know this will cause downvotes and angry responses because we can’t base these opinions on looks (and in reality, the actor is probably a perfectly nice guy) but this character flat-out gives me the creeps. And it’s worse when he wants to discuss the facts of life with a roomful of kids.”

The opinion divided viewers, with one stating: “It’s probably just the mustache lol. I won’t disagree though I can see it.” Another agreed: “He looks 15 but with a Tom Selleck thick mustache that gives a creepo vibe.”

While some fans find Pastor Rob’s look offputting, others think it’s a clever ploy – with the creepy feeling delivering exactly what the writers want.

“While I agree with your sentiment, this is exactly what the writers wanted to portray with his character. I see him as a caricature of exactly the type of pastor you’ll find in small Texas towns. That is more scary,” one fan summed up.

A fourth chimed in, “The character was basically written to balance out the dynamic between George and Brenda. So he’s deliberately creepy in a way that only Mary would find appealing.”

It’s still unclear whether Pastor Rob will return for Season 7, having last been seen in Season 6.
