“We want Rocky” trends as fans rally behind The Rock amidst Wrestlemania controversy

On last week’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, The Rock returned to confront current WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns. Amid controversy over “stealing” the Wrestlemania main event, fans rallied around the legendary superstar as “We want Rocky” trends on social media.

With his return, The Rock essentially pushed Cody Rhodes out of the Wrestlemania main event, a spot the American Nightmare rightfully earned with his second consecutive Royal Rumble triumph last month.

Fans were unhappy with this development, as a loud contingent took to social media to bash the sudden change in plans.

“We want Cody” began trending on X late Friday night. It carried on until the wee hours of Sunday. That’s nearly 48 hours of anger and confusion from the WWE Universe.

However, not everyone is upset at the inclusion of The Rock into Wrestlemania. The prospect of two family members — arguably the two most popular superstars in the locker room — going toe-to-toe on the biggest stage is enticing.

Those favoring the surprising addition to the main event helped get “We want Rocky” trending on X as a response to the Rhodes supporters.

Fans in The Rock’s corner say no one moves the needle like The Great One. According to the numbers, there’s evidence to back this claim.

A Wrestlemania main event involving the two pillars of The Bloodline will surely break records if the match comes to fruition.

The YouTube video of The Rock and Reigns staring down in the middle of the ring has eclipsed 80 million views. “We want Rocky” ranked atop the trending list on X, plus The Rock and Bloodline merch is as popular as ever on WWE Shop.

Fans will continue going back and forth over the next couple of months. One side claims, “We want Cody,” while the other side yells back, “We want Rocky.”

We’ll see which segment of the WWE Universe gets the last laugh when Wrestlemania XL arrives on April 6 and 7 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
